In preparation for the 50th Anniversary of the American Revolutionary War Congress asked President James Monroe to invite comrade at arms, fellow Mason, abolitionist, and friend Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, to tour the United States and see the fruits of our combined labors. Lafayette’s 25 month long tour over 1824-25 included the October 24th visit to Fort Monroe.

Join us as we use the occasion of the 193rd anniversary of President Monroe’s death to examine his relationship with Lafayette as we explore a strong and little known friendship that would affect the future of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the young United States.
