Description
Down on their Luck Orchestra featuring Stacy Marie-Luce:
"I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate"
The Down on Their Luck Orchestra is a musical ensemble featuring National Park Rangers and local New Orleans musicians. The program is used to demonstrate musical elements that helped nurture New Orleans’ role as the birthplace of jazz. In today's video, the band features musical intern Stacy Marie-Luce on vocals. The JAZZ Park has had very good success in various internship programs such as the Historic Black College and University and Latino Heritage Internship Program to name two. Stacy, who is originally from Saint-Joseph, Martinique taught the Park Rangers about her culture and musical upbringing while we taught her about the origins and history of Jazz in New Orleans.
"I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate," often simply Sister Kate, is an up-tempo jazz dance song, published in 1915 by Clarence Williams and Armand Piron. It is believed to be based on a bawdy tune by Louis Armstrong (about Kate Townsend, a murdered brothel madam). Louis Armstrong claimed he wrote the song and sold it to Mr. Piron, which would explain Mr. Armstrong’s refusal to play Sister Kate despite the song’s enormous popularity.
If you enjoy our version of the song, the dignitaries are introduced at the end of the video. Enjoy!
