Description
Ann Marie - Navajo Nation (Diné).
Duane Koyawena with R2D2 - Hopi Painter
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — November 19, 20, 21, 2024: 9 am to 4 pm each day.
- Ann Marie is a traditional Diné hairstylist versed in the stye called "tsiiyeel"which, involves wrapping the hair around a yarn or string and tying it into a large, symmetrical knot at the back of the head. It's said to symbolize the squash blossom flower and reflects Diné agricultural roots and cultural identity.
- Duane Koyawena is a Hopi painter who draws influence for his work from Hopi culture and began learning from his father, Lloyd Koyawena. Using acrylic paint, he not only works on canvas but extends his work to cover skateboard decks, shoes, and murals. Through his work he hopes to educate and bring awareness to visitors about Indigenous culture and history.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their craft and art.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
