Lecture: Crossing the Red Sea: St. Louis and the Exodus of 1879
In the aftermath of the end of Reconstruction, thousands of formerly enslaved people made their way from the South to the Kansas plains. Called “Exodusters,” they were searching for their own promised land, and St. Louis became a key stop in their journey west. Many of the Exodusters found themselves stranded in St. Louis, and Bryan Jack describes how the city’s African American community organized relief in response to this crisis and provided the migrants with the financial, spiritual, and logistical support to continue their journey.
