Description

In WWII,  Marine Chester Nez was one of the 29 Navajo men who developed and implemented the top-secret Navajo code, the only spoken code in modern warfare that has never been cracked. Author Judith Scheiss Avila met Chester and his son Mike in 2007. Working together over a 3 year period, Chester shared his memoirs with Judith. Join us as Judith discusses Chester's upbringing herding sheep in the Checkerboard area of the Navajo Nation to sending codes under enemy fire in the South Pacific.
