On July 20, 1774, the citizens of Hanover County met to elect representatives to the upcoming First Virginia Convention at Williamsburg. Patrick Henry and John Syme were presented with resolutions to take to the Convention -- resolutions demanding that Virginia colonists be treated with the full rights of English citizens, and not be taxed without representation. The Resolves, as they became known, are considered a crucial early step in the road to revolution.
As we approach the 250th anniversay of the Resolves, Mark Nucup of the Hanover Museum of History and Culture will give insights into how the Resolves came about and the effect such revolutionary words had on the colonies as a whole.
