The Colfax Massacre in History and Memory
On Easter Sunday 1873 over 100 African Americans were murdered by white supremacists near Colfax, Louisiana. This massacre of Black citizens and voters was among the most devastating acts of terrorism to take place during Reconstruction, though the contested memory of what white community members called a “riot” has, until recently, been hotly debated since. Join a park ranger4 for an evening program which explores the history of the Colfax Massacre and the changing memorialization of this event 160 years later.
