Description

Please join us for a special opportunity, in celebration of Pride Month, as Kumu Hina comes to Kona to share about māhū in traditional Hawaiian culture, and her journey as a māhū wahine (transgender woman), followed by a showing of one of her multi-award winning films, Kapaemahu, in our park amphitheater!

Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) teacher, cultural advisor, filmmaker, and leader. A founding member of Kulia Nā Mamo, a community organization established to improve the quality of life for māhū wāhine (transgender women), she also served for 13 years as the Director of Culture at a Honolulu public charter school dedicated to using native Hawaiian culture, history, and empowering the next generation of warrior scholars. One of the first transgender candidates to run for statewide political office in the United States in 2014, Kumu Hina also served as chair of the Oʻahu Island Burial Council, which oversees the management of Native Hawaiian burial and ancenstral remains.
