Description

The Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble is returning to the national stage to celebrate the National Park system. With their fourth funding award from the National Endowment for the Arts, acclaimed composers were commissioned to create music to be performed within the parks during the ensemble’s 17-day, 4,500-mile July tour.

They will present outdoor concerts at five national parks—Rocky Mountain, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, and Great Basin. All concerts are free and open to the public, and appropriate for all ages.

The music to be performed this summer reflects the immense diversity of the parks while capturing their breathtaking and inspiring landscapes and wildlife. Hannah Boissonneault’s Murmuring, based on Bryce Canyon National Park, recreates the floating, ethereal echo of the canyons along with the push and pull of the erosion that formed the incredible structures of the area.

About the Ensemble:

Based in Allendale, Michigan, the Grand Valley State University NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE is an undergraduate classical chamber ensemble dedicated to music of the past twenty years. The group has been profiled in numerous publications including Newsweek and the New York Times, and featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, WNYC's Radiolab, and Performance Today. Their critically acclaimed recordings have been named to year-end best release lists by the New York Times, NPR, Washington Post, LA Weekly, Time Out Chicago, and many others. Their recordings have appeared in film and television shows on MTV, Showtime, at over 75 film festivals around the world, and in movie theaters throughout the United States as part of the soundtrack to the 2015 film As I AM: The Life and Times of DJ AM. Their album of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians was named one of the top five classical recordings of the decade by WNYC.
