Description

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a special 1-hour, ranger-led program examining the role of photography at “Point Lookout” during the Civil War. This program will take place inside Point Park, on top of Lookout Mountain.

Most images of the American Civil War come from battles located in the war’s Eastern Theater. Photographs from Gettysburg, Antietam, Appomattox, and other locations are what we associate with the war. Not many images appear of Western Theater battles like Shiloh, Vicksburg, or Chickamauga. However, the one place that probably had the most images captured of it was the “Point” of Lookout Mountain. All because one man, Robert “Royan” M. Linn, chose to place his studio there to capture the picturesque view from the mountain top. Come learn more about R. M. Linn and the provocative images he created in a short amount of time that still captivate us today.
