Description

Description: Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a walk through a beautiful hardwood forest supporting a thriving diversity of native ferns, flowering shrubs, and wildflowers. We will hike through the xeric oak-hickory forest and mesic ravine forest down to Sope Creek. Imagine this area as farm fields or pine plantations for the mills instead of forest as we walk along the traces of nineteenth-century farm roads. Look for paw prints of the many species of wildlife that thrive here and perhaps see a salamander or two from the tiny tributaries.

Facilities: There are no restrooms at Sope Creek. Nearest restrooms are at Terrell Mill Park.

Difficulty: This hike is leisurely on a flat floodplain trail. These walks are slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way, likely not suitable for very young children.

Bring: Dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for walking on a possibly muddy forest trail. Bring plenty of water and a snack.

Limit: 30 persons
