Remembering the "Indian New Deal"
During the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt attempted to establish a relief program to help Native American communities, referred to as the "Indian New Deal". As Commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, John Collier aimed to preserve Native American culture through initiatives that offered self-governance and protection of tribal lands. As a result of his efforts, U.S. policies toward Indigenous Peoples changed.
