Description

George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to announce that Prairie Day is set for Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Held in conjunction with the City of Diamond’s Gem City Days, Prairie Day is FREE of charge. Learn more about George Washington Carver’s childhood environment through music, storytelling, living history, and exhibits.

There is something for everyone at Prairie Day and children will want to earn a special junior ranger badge. Musical performances are scheduled all day at the music tent, at the 1881 Carver House, and inside the visitor center. Be sure to hear the Vogts Sisters at noon and 2 p.m. Storytellers will entertain during horse-drawn wagon rides. Brother John performs as Tom Bass, famed African American horse whisperer and founder of the American Royal Horse Show. Catch Dee Ban’s Missouri history in song, the Paic Family strings, and Homemade Jam Dulcimers.

Across the grounds you will be able to watch a banjo builder, enjoy a quilt show, learn about treadle sewing machines, watch basket weavers, learn about beekeeping, and see a display of wild edibles from master gardeners. Learn more about slavery in Missouri and the turmoil of the Civil War.

Visit with Missouri Master Naturalists about grassland plants, animals, monarch migration, and growing native plants. Talk with experts about wild-land fire, birding, and archaeology. Say hello to the therapy horses of Horses Healing Hearts. Walk the trail to the 1881 Moses Carver House and dip a candle, watch the blacksmiths, wool spinners, weavers, and broom maker. Press apples at the cider press. Learn about Dutch-oven cooking, organic gardening, food preservation, and butter churning. There are many other exhibits and activities at Prairie Day. Stop by for this educational, fun event!
