Smallmouth Bass Public Meeting and Mitigation Planning

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

Smallmouth bass (SMB) are a high-risk, nonnative species within the Colorado River Basin that is established in Lake Powell.  Recent, low reservoir elevations in Lake Powell have contributed to the dramatic warming of water release temperatures making the river more suitable for SMB reproduction. Reproduction of SMB was documented in the Lees Ferry Reach for the first time in 2022. SMB pose a serious risk to the rainbow trout fishery in the Lees Ferry Reach and downstream native fish populations.  Because of this risk, NPS is initiating a study to evaluate the effectiveness of reducing SMB numbers in the Lees Ferry Reach.  We will be using boat electrofishing equipment to sample the fish population.  The week of October 24 and November 7 have been identified as the first two weeks of the study.  All sampling will take place at night between 6 pm and 3 am.
