Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Historian Jonathan Tracey will present a talk on the life and leadership of Colonel Joseph Thoburn, as part of the Battle of Cool Spring 160th anniversary commemoration.

Thoburn was the leader of the Federal attack at Cool Spring in July of 1864. On October 19, 1864, Thoburn was killed in action while commanding a Federal Division of the 8th Corps at the Battle of Cedar Creek.

This talk is part of an all-day schedule of events organized by Shenandoah University's McCormick Civil War Institute. Battlefield trails will be open throughout the day for self-guided tours, the updated exhibition about Cool Spring and its aftermath will be available for viewing, and an exhibition of Civil War watercolors will be on display.
