Description
Desert View's 2023 Cultural Demonstration Series begins this week.
Duane Tawahongva (Hopi Silversmith) will demonstrate how he handcrafts his exquisite silver overlay jewelry. His designs reflect the rich Hopi culture and are inspired by the petroglyphs found throughout the region. Meet Duane from 9 am to 4 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, March, 14, 15, 16, at Desert View Watchtower.
- Duane is from the village of Mishongnovi on the Hopi reservation. He is a self-taught silversmith and incorporates influences from the beauty of Hopi lands. You will find hundreds of traditional patterns incorporated into his bracelets, earrings, rings, bolo ties, and belt buckles. Hand carved prayer feathers, clan symbols, water waves, rain clouds, and corn maidens are just some of the symbols adorning his overlay silver work.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
