Description
This lecture reexamines the Nullification Crisis of 1832-33, during which South Carolina declared two federal laws null and void and brought the country to the brink of civil war. As radical Nullifiers prepared for war and began imagining independence, South Carolina's Unionist minority worked desperately to hold the country together. By examining this struggle within South Carolina, Neumann sheds new light on the events that led to secession and Civil War thirty years later.
Speaker: Dr. Brian Neumann, University of Virginia 2021
