Seeking Freedom
During the Civil War, about 2,000 enslaved people sought freedom amongst the US Army lines in Harpers Ferry. Their fate hinged on the outcome of the Battle of Harpers Ferry in September of 1862. After the Confederate victory, the freedom seekers were forced to return to enslavement. Visit the John Brown Fort to discover the stories of 13 women and children among them and their courageous attempt to claim freedom.
