Description

The National Park Service (NPS) is partnering with the Central Kentucky Audubon Society and the Frankfort Audubon Society to lead a special walking tour that will highlight the natural and historic resources of the park, specifically birds and the rich and complex cultural significance that exist at the park.

The title of the program is inspired by Sergeant Elijah P. Marrs, who served with Co. L, 12th United States Colored Heavy Artillery at Camp Nelson during the Civil War. Upon enlisting in the US Army, Marrs was reborn, writing:

"I felt freedom in my bones, and when I saw the American eagle with outspread wings, upon the American flag, with the motto E Pluribus Unum, the thought came to me, ‘Give me liberty or give me death’. Then all fear banished. I had quit thinking as a child and had commenced to think as a man."

The 1.5-mile moderate walk will be conducted over cut grass trails and dirt paths. Participants should wear hiking boots and bring water. Leashed dogs are permitted on the program.
