Description

Join Park Guide Evan as she discusses the changes in St. Louis’s immigrant population during the first half of the 19th century. St. Louis was founded by French fur traders in 1764. Administered by the French and Spanish, it was a small frontier outpost during its early years. After the 1804 Louisiana Purchase, Americans began settling the town, and by the start of the Civil War, the city's population had exploded and lost most of its early French character. St. Louis was a city populated by Eastern industrialists and bankers, slave owning farmers from the Upper South, Southern cotton-traders, and increasingly, German and Irish immigrants, who changed the culture of the city and played an important role in the United States' victory over the Confederacy. For reservations, call 314-842-1867 ext. 230.
