Description

Coffee Talk at Kahuku: Anchialine Pools, Windows to Hidden Hawaiʻi

Anchialine pools host one of the rarest ecosystems on earth, yet few people have ever heard of them. Hawai‘i Island is home to approximately 650 of the estimated 700 or so anchialine pools in the State. Join Anne Farahi along with park ranger Dean Gallagher as they take us on a virtual visit into this mysterious hidden realm of Hawai‘i. Anne is the Lead Aquatic Biological Science Technician for the National Park Service's Pacific Island Network Inventory & Monitoring Division. Sheʻs been working in Hawaii aquatic ecosystems since 2007 and helped develop the first standardized anchialine pool monitoring protocol. She loves the adorable ʻōpae ʻula and pinao that call anchialine pools home. Dean has been working in the field of conservation biology for over 25 years. His focus and passion will always be connecting people with some of the rarest species on earth and championing their protection and continued survival.
