Description

Two prominent Americans, Nellie Taft and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, are among those associated with the Titanic Memorial. Their stories form part of Peter Charles L’Enfant’s 1791 vision for the Federal City, a symbolic representation of the American Idea. That Idea embraced the Titanic on April 15th 1912. Taft, Whitney, and the men the Memorial honors, each made a difference.
