Description

Have you ever wondered about the horizontal lines on Mt. Sentinel and Mt Jumbo? Or you have may have heard of references to an enormous glacial lake that filled the Missoula valley and beyond? Get an illustrated overview of Glacial Lake Missoula and learn how to see the mark it made across our landscape.

Geologist Bruce Baty will discuss the origin of Glacial Lake Missoula, a lake the size of Lake Erie, that existed in Western Montana 12,000 years ago. The Lake filled and drained many times and left evidence of its existence across the landscape in Montana, Idaho, and Eastern Washington.  This program will also explore some of that evidence, which is quite visible to the knowledgeable observer.

After or before the lecture, spend time in our Glacial Lake Missoula exhibit featuring video footage, photographs, maps, and detailed information on local GLM features.
