Description
Located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, Castle Clinton stands where New York City began and represents not only the city’s growth, but the growth of a nation. Initially intended to prevent a British invasion in 1812, the fortification has transformed over the years to welcome theatergoers, immigrants, sightseers, and now, millions of visitors to New York Harbor.
At 10am and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, Rangers will give a special tour of the historic building focusing on 1855 to 1890 when it was the Castle Garden Emigrant Depot, the immigrant reception center prior to Ellis Island. Using images of the interior of the facility and stories from actual people who were processed in the building, this often-overshadowed part of American history comes back to life.
