Description
Watch artisans at work this week as Desert View's 2022 Cultural Demonstration Series continues, from 9 am to 4 pm on Tuesday November 15, Wednesday November 16, and Thursday, November 17, 2022. Location: Desert View Watchtower.
Jayne and Lynn Quam, Zuni Stone Carvers.
-
Jayne and Lynn Quam, have been carving traditional Zuni fetishes for over 30 years and have won multiple awards for their craft. Stop by the Desert View Watchtower to see them in action.
-
Jayne says, “In 1980 I carved my first animal fetish and received an order for more. A few years later we began going to shows. As the years go by, we gain new experiences with different stones. Our ideas for new designs are coming to life every day.”
-
Lynn says, "I carve all kinds of animals. My favorite pieces to carve are buffalos and bears."
Beginning December 2, 2022, through the end of February 2023, the demonstrations will be held in the lobby of the South Rim Visitor Center. Demonstrations during these months will be presented on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
