Description
We are excited to be offering our popular turtle program at Great Island Camp on July 30th, 2025 at 8:30 am!
Join us for this unique learning experience! Several days after a nest has hatched, park biologists excavate the nest and inventory the contents. This usually includes lots of hatched and unhatched turtle eggs. It can also include baby turtles that didn't make it but sometimes includes live baby turtles that are released to the ocean! (We can't guarantee anything - nature is unpredictable). In addition to seeing the inventory, the program also allows visitors an opportunity to speak with a park biologist about turtles and turtle management within the park.
This is a free program taking place oceanside of Great Island Camp. For visitors who are already camping on the island and/or staying in the cabins you will still need to reserve a spot as spaces are limited. Visitors not already on South Core Banks can arrange to walk on the vehicle ferry. They will need to make reservations with the vehicle ferry out of Davis, NC. Before making a ferry reservation, please call to confirm a space.
Interested parties should call (252) 838-8950 to reserve your spot. Space is limited to 12 people. Attendees should expect a time commitment of roughly 2 hours from 8:30am-10.30am.
Come prepared for the elements (hats, sunblock, bug spray, water, snacks, and other items you may need). A park interpretive ranger will lead the group and answer detailed questions at the site of the turtle nest.
