Description
Join us at the National Monument for quiet remembrance and reflection at the site of homes destroyed by rioters in 1908. Luminaries will outline the approximate locations of these homes. Park Rangers will be available to answer questions about the site’s archaeology and the people who once called this place home.
You are welcome to observe the luminaries between 7:30 pm and 9:00 pm.
At 7:45 pm, there will be a brief ceremony with remarks. Speakers include the following:
- Christopher Collins, Superintendent, Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument.
- Joe Crain, Director of Public Programs and Community Engagement, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
- Brian Mitchell, University of Illinois-Springfield Lincoln Studies Center.
- Quinn Gilly, Park Ranger, Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument.
The National Monument is located at 400 North 9th Street in Springfield, Illinois. Free parking is available at the HSHS St. John's Hospital Women and Children's Clinic parking garage. If navigating by GPS, use this address: 500 North 9th Street, Springfield, Illinois. Park in the garage and then walk south to the National Monument.
