Description
On March 15, 1781, the British Army started the day with a 12 mile march to reach the battlefield. When the battle ended, the American revolutionaries marched 12 miles to their camp on Troublesome Creek. For both sides, marching that distance was a common event. Combining it with a 2 1/2 hour battle would have made it an exhausting affair.
For Memorial Day Weekend, we invite visitors to come and walk the park to experience the rigors of long distance marching. Anyone who completes certain distance goals can receive special rewards.
Along the way, interpretation will be available through guided tours, a display of soldier’s gear at the Start/Finish post, and our new Audio Walking Tour on the official National Park Service App.
To participate, simply meet rangers at the start/finish post located at the Historic Hoskins Farm site at 2200 New Garden Road. Check in at the same location after each lap. This is not a race, so all we will be checking is to make sure no one is completing laps suspiciously fast.
A full lap of the park, starting at the Historic Hoskins Farm, around the tour road, and back, is approximately 3 miles.
Completing 2 laps earns you a brand new 4” Guilford Courthouse Sticker. Completing 4 laps earns you a water bottle with General Greene’s famous quote, “We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again.”
Optional: If you complete the new Audio Walking Tour of the battlefield or attend a ranger-guided tour, that will also count as one complete lap.
