Description
Ice Harvesting was a major industry in the Poconos in the early 1900s. Railroads were critical for the shipment of harvested ice to metropolitan areas. Upon arrival, visitors have the option to participate in a walking tour of the Tobyhanna Millpond #1 Ice House where an ice harvest is held each year, weather permitting; the tour covers about 1 mile (round-trip) of uneven ground.
A self-guided town tour will also be available for visitors not wanting to attend the Ice House Tour.
Tobyhanna Station Description and Details:
History: The Tobyhanna train station was built in 1908 by the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad and was leased and restored by the Pocono Mountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in 1994. Today, the station serves as the chapter’s meeting space and it houses a collection of railroad artifacts including two running model train layouts plus a small gift shop.
Amenities: Picnic tables are available, no public restrooms, plenty of free parking. The station is located next to an active freight railroad for the train enthusiast.
