Description
The National Park Service is offering free kayak clinics on Wednesdays this summer starting June 26. Additional dates include July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and August 7 and 14. The clinics will take place on Lake Yankton from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. east of the fishing pier. They are open to persons age 12 to adult with no prior paddling experience. “These clinics are an introduction to kayaking and provide visitors an opportunity to learn basic paddling skills and safety information related to the water sport,” says park ranger Teresa Mentzer with the Missouri National Recreational River. Mentzer says, “Kayaking is increasing in popularity and the National Park Service wants people to learn to paddle safely.” Ranger Mentzer is certified in kayaking by the American Canoe Association.
Kayaks, equipment, and personal floatation devices (PFDs) are provided. Bring sunscreen, water and protective clothing. Enrollment for the clinic is limited and reservations are required. To reserve a spot please email MNRR508@gmail.com or call Mentzer in advance at the Missouri National Recreational River headquarters 605-665-0209 Ext. 29. Deadline for reservations is at noon the day prior to the clinic date.
