Description
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 13, 14 and 15, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm, Daryl Shack, Zuni stone carver/painter and Benina Kallestewa, Zuni Silversmith/stone carver, will share their culture and how it relates to their arts. I
About Daryl Shack
- Daryl Shack is a painter and fetish carver with over 44 years of experience. His fetish carvings are made with various stones that are found locally, and from around the world. For his paintings, he uses Acrylic and Enamel paints on canvas. Zuni Culture and Traditions have influenced his art.

- Daryl relates, "I’ve developed my own signature styles including my fetish offering bundles which are known as ‘Shack Stacks’. My paintings offer a unique and complementing cross between traditional images in the foreground and contemporary impressionistic backgrounds. I’m my own worst critic, and I’m continually always trying to find the next new thing. That’s what I like about art, it makes life interesting."

About Benina Kallestewa
- Benina Kallestewa has been working on carvings and creating jewelry for more than 20 yrs. Her father showed her the techniques of cluster work in traditional Zuni squash blossoms, necklaces, pins and bracelets. The techniques for carving animals she taught herself with help from various friends over the years.

- She likes both jewelry and carving, but if she had to choose one, it would be jewelry. Benina particularly likes how the finished jewelry pieces bring joy and smiles when customers see what she has created.

Meet and watch Daryl and Benina at work at the Grand Canyon South Rim Visitor Center, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 13 through 15, from 10am to 4pm.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.
 - This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
