Description

The Pueblo Revival style is a vernacular architectural style of the American Southwest. This style, inspired by local Native American architecture, can be found throughout New Mexico and Arizona. Santa Fe based Architect John Gaw Meem played a critical role in developing the vernacular design that embraced low roofs defined by vigas, crafted wooden details and earthen colored exteriors among others. This lecture will examine the architectural history of the Pueblo Revival style and the challenges in conserving adobe and earthen structures. The presentation will include Native American perspective of earthen-work deterioration properties and indigenous building trades involvement that created some of the Nation’s most iconic buildings, many listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Dominic Henry is the Exhibits Specialist/Architectural Conservator at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.
