New Orleans JAZZ NHP’s Song o’ the Day:
“As Time Goes By”
Possibly the most often misquoted line from any movie is, “Play it again, Sam.” In the 1942 classic “Casablanca”, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) implores, “Play it once, Sam”, and Rick (Humphrey Bogart) demands curtly, “Play it!” Nevertheless, that request to repeat is never uttered in that film about that song which became one of the most popular melodies in American Cinema, surpassed only by Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow”. Sam (Dooley Wilson) initially resists, eventually submits and, well, life goes on…
We choose this song today in remembrance of the May 12th, 1898, adoption of Louisiana’s “Grandfather Clause” in reaction to the 14th & 15th Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America. Such postbellum “Grandfather Clauses” placed impediments in the paths of Black American Citizens who aspired to exercise a right to vote. Eventually, though, progress toward a “more perfect Union” brought us Civil Rights Acts and such which demonstrate our improvement as a People. Or does it? Could it be that some of our united States are even now pursuing gimmicky legislation designed to discourage anyone unlike themselves from casting ballots?
Hmmm… Play it again, Rick…
“It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by…”
From: You Got It
Composed by: Herman Hupfeld, 1931
