Description

Join Naturalist Jerry Hightower and enjoy summer wildflowers, wildlife, and learn more of the area’s natural and cultural history. This is a leisurely hike along this fairly level trail, which passes by several types of important river bottomland wetlands and returns along the river. The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than other habitats. However, with several types of habitats converging along this trail, it is a great pace for wildlife in general. This area is a designated National Wildlife Viewing Area. It’s hard to imagine this area under cultivation. Yet that was the case for perhaps centuries. In the late 19th century and early twentieth century the Powers Family and then J.C. Hyde and his family cultivated corn in the narrow river floodplain where today we view mostly the marvels of nature.

This walk will be leisurely. However, this walk is not suitable for very young children.

Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and activity level. Bring water and you might include snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars, hand lens, and camera. Note: A daily entrance fee or annual pass is needed.
