Description
In this 2-day workshop, generously sponsored by the Valley Forge Park Alliance, participants will learn how to apply period construction techniques from expert tailor Henry Cooke of Historic Costume Services. By the end of the weekend, participants should be well on their way towards a completed garment.
In the 18th century, men wore breeches not just in everyday life, but also in the military. As such, they are an important garment used in living history impressions, but they are difficult to reproduce and must be fitted to the individual.
Materials needed: pins, sewing needles, beeswax, scissors for thread and cloth trimming, a pair of shears/bent trimmers for cutting cloth if needed, tailor's chalk, sewing machine optional, as most of the instruction is for hand sewing. A bagged lunch is strongly recommended.
Appropriate textiles for reproduction breeches include: wool broadcloth in black, brown, drab (most common colors), gray, green, blue or red. In warmer weather, linen, and linen drill breeches in natural, blue, or brown are also accurate. Other types of acceptable fabrics include wool kersey, wool serge, wool plush, cotton velvet, linsey-woolsey, or fine wale cotton corduroy. Crown Forces also wore breeches of white or buff wool.
