Critical to the outcome of the Civil War, the Shenandoah Valley witnessed over 300 combat actions between 1861-1865. A long, narrow corridor in the war’s eastern theater, the Valley was close to both capitals, provided an avenue of invasion for both armies, and was a key source of food and supplies for the Confederates. The Confederates fought to protect that source of food and supplies, the Federals to destroy it. Many notable soldiers fought in the Valley including Stonewall Jackson, Jubal Early, Philip Sheridan, and George Armstrong Custer, along with the thousands whose names are long forgotten. Besides the battles and soldiers, however, the Valley’s Civil War story also includes the hardships of the citizens, many of whom endured the pillaging and burning of their farms and businesses.
