Description
In celebration of National Park Rx Day, on Sunday April 28th from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., visitors to Tumacácori National Historical Park will encounter an array of healthy outdoor recreation options. Hiking, walking, running, stretching, dancing, and healthy eating will be on tap to highlight the value of parks. Spending time outdoors confers many well-documented health benefits including mental, physical, and social wellbeing. Find out more about the Park Prescription program at http://www.parkrx.org.
The morning begins at 7:00 a.m. at the Tubac Presidio where runners, walkers, hikers, and strollers can join the first ever Anza Fun Run. Travel at your own pace down the mostly level and shady four-mile stretch of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail between Tumacácori and Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Pre-registration is required in order to sign up and collect the free T-shirt. Registration costs $20 per adult, free for kids under 16.
Starting at 8:00 a.m., visitors can participate in a Health and Wellness Fair held in Tumacácori’s picnic area. Join a class, watch a demonstration, and get information about local community resources for healthy living. Community organizations and individuals interested in being exhibitors at the health fair should contact Melanie_Rawlins@nps.gov.
All morning, between 8:00 a.m. and noon, the park will provide a continuously running shuttle between the trailheads at Tubac and Tumacácori. Hikers and walkers have the opportunity to start at either end and catch a free ride back to their starting point. Participants hiking park-to-park will tally up nearly 13,000 steps and earn their “I Hike for Health” pin. Wear good walking shoes, dress for the weather, and carry water and snacks.
For more information on the hike or other park events and activities, call Tumacácori National Historical Park at 520-377-5060, or visit the park website, at nps.gov/tuma.
