Description

Join park rangers and volunteers for a guided tour of the historic Ford Mansion.  This structure, originally completed in 1774, was home to the Ford family of Morristown for nearly one hundred years. General Washington was invited to use the home by Theodosia Ford, widow of New Jersey Militia Col. Jacob Ford Jr., during the Continental Army's winter encampment during the "Hard Winter" of 1779-1780.  General Washington arrived on December 1st, 1779, transforming the Ford Mansion into "Washington's Headquarters" for the seven months of the General's stay.

Visitors will learn about the Ford family, General Washington and his "military family", and the house itself. The tour group will view the first floor of the home, which is furnished to appear much as it did during the General's stay. This includes the Conference Room, Washington's Study, the two rooms used by the Ford family during this time, the kitchen, and the pantry.  Joining a tour is the only way to see the inside of the Ford mansion.

Tour tickets are free, and distributed on a first come, first serve basis.  Please inquire about tour availability at the reservation desk when you arrive at the Washington's Headquarters museum, located next to the Ford mansion. Due to restrictions concerning COVID-19, tours are very limited in size, and will only travel to the first floor of the mansion at this time.  In addition, for the safety of our staff and other guests, park guidelines concerning masks and distancing between groups must be followed when on the tour.

For more information, please contact the park directly.
