“Revolutionary War Emigrants: Black Loyalists and Their Settlements”

Presented by: Taylor Brookins (Historian, National Park Service, History and Preservation Assistance, Region 1)

It is estimated that nearly 20,000 Black soldiers fought for the Loyalists during the American Revolution. After the British departed from America following their defeat what became of the Black Loyalists who were promised freedom for their service? Many settled in Canada, Florida, and in parts of Africa; while others were forced back into the bondage of slavery. This presentation explores the little-known history of Black Loyalists and their postwar settlement patterns.
