Description
Dr. Carole Nash, JMU Professor Integrated Science and lead for the team that did the archeological survey and research work at the Belmont site. Steve Bair, Retired NPS Ranger and a long-time volunteer with SNP Archives.
In the late 19th century, the Belmont Vineyard, located on land just south of Front Royal that eventually became part of Shenandoah National Park, was one of the important early wine producers in the country. Learn how archeologists pieced together this fascinating but little-known story. You will hear first-hand from leaders of the survey about the tools, techniques, and technology used to fill in the details, including airborne lasers to map the terrain. You will visit the site and see the ruins as they are today. To top off the experience you will visit the Glen Manor Vineyard just outside the park for a look at their current operations and a chance to sample their wines.
