Description

During the early nineteenth century, Providence went through the growing pains of a rapidly expanding and industrializing city: the divide increased between the rich and poor, as did tensions between black and white residents. The North Shore archaeological site was in a part of town known as Snowtown, characterized by a constant flow of short-term occupants, ramshackle housing, and what many city-dwellers considered unsavory behavior. For many contemporaries, Snowtown had a rough reputation—they saw it as a place filled with disreputable and disorderly people who preyed on the upstanding and moral citizens of the town. This presentation will discuss the history and archaeology of the North Shore Site, focusing on the nineteenth-century residents of Snowtown and their participation in and influence on urban life in Providence.
