Description

Are you looking for something fun to do this summer? Come and join the staff at George Rogers Clark National Historical Park (GRCNHP) for its annual Summer Junior Ranger Series. Junior Rangers are invited to attend events focused on hands-on learning and fun! The 2019 series consists of four events, one every month (June, July, August, October), all dealing with different topics and interests.

The first Junior Ranger event, Three Forts Day, will be a two-day event focused on the three different forts  built inside what is now GRCNHP (French Post Vincennes, Fort Sackville,  and American Fort Knox III). The story of Vincennes goes all the way back to 1732 with the establishement of a fur trading post on the grounds of George Rogers Clark NHP. That story continues today! The event features re-enactors portraying units and civilians living in Vincennes during the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812 periods.

Activites throughout the day will include a presentation by Rusty Cottrel, who will offer a portrayal of Shawnee Chief Blackfoot at 2:00 pm on Saturday. Native American re-enactors will be on hand demonstrating Native American culture on the frontier. Junior Rangers will be to decorate their own Native American sleeping mat! In addition, kids can join the militia and experience life on the frontier for a soldier and see what they ate, how they dressed, etc. Junior Rangers will also discover how soldiers constructed forts using 18th century tools, play 18th century games, and so many other fun activities. A variety of other 18th century activities will be available including candle-making, bullet-making, weaving and sewing, and so much more!

The event will take place at the GRCNHP Visitor Center at 401 S. 2nd St. in Vincennes on Saturday June 22 from 10 am until 4 pm (ET) and Sunday June 23 from 11 am until 3 pm (ET).

The next Junior Ranger Series event will take place on Saturday July 13 and is entitled "Archaeology Day" and will take place at GRCNHP from 1-4 pm (ET). All events are open to the public and are free of charge.
