Lees Ferry, AZ is at the bottom of Glen Canyon and the top of Grand Canyon. All brown trout must be caught on the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and the confluence of the Paria River. Place trout heads and entrails with data cards in provided bags in the freezer at Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center.

Catch Fish, Get Paid

Since November 2020, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has offered an incentivized harvest of brown trout on the the Colorado River between the dam and the  Paria River. The bounty for each brown trout turned in is currently $33. 

Brown Trout Bonanza: More Fish, More Money!

In addition to the current bounty of $33 per brown trout, a number of “Bonuses” being offered during the bonanza include:

  • An additional $50 bonus for each 3 fish turned in during the month
  • A month-end bonus of $500 for the person who turns in the most brown trout caught from the Colorado River between the dam and the  Paria River
  • A bonus of $50 for each scientific pit tag turned in with the brown trout
  • A “Golden Ticket” bonus of $300 for each scientific sonic tag turned in with a brown trout.

There will also be a judged contest:

  • Best photograph of one or more brown trout: $250

  • Best video of a brown trout being caught from the river: $250

How Do I Join?

To participate in the Brown Trout Bonanza 

Anglers must have a valid Arizona fishing license. Anglers from other states may participate with an out-of-state AZ fishing license. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks are allowed. Employees of the National Park Service are not eligible. Any brown trout over six inches can be turned in. Remove head and guts at fish cleaning station to put in bag with data card you fill out. Place bagged fish in freezer at Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center. 

Around the middle of May 2021, your total bounty will be sent to you. The Bonanza is sponsored by Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in partnership with the Glen Canyon Conservancy. It is part of the Brown Trout Incentivized Harvest Program, taking place on the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and the Paria River.

All photos and videos must be taken along the Glen Canyon reach of the Colorado River (Lees Ferry area), during the Bonanza (April 1-May 2, 2021).
