Legacy of Service: Exploring Stories of Veterans at Appomattox Court House
Join us as we honor those who served in the armed forces on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Along with a series of special programs, a small display in the Visitor Center will be available throughout the day, featuring veterans’ accounts of their experiences at Appomattox. The program schedule is as follows:
1:00 p.m.- Veterans of Appomattox Court House
From the Civil War to World War I, discover the ways in which veterans contributed to preserving the memory of the events which transpired at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
2:00 p.m. – After the Surrender: Veteran Visits to Appomattox
Though having served on different sides, Federal and Confederate veterans often returned to Appomattox for the shared purpose of healing and remembrance. Using their own stories, this ranger-led program tours the village in the footsteps of veterans who came back to Appomattox Court House after the war.
3:00 p.m.- United States Colored Troops at Appomattox
More than 180,000 African American soldiers served in the ranks of the Federal Army. They were known as United States Colored Troops (USCT). Seven USCT regiments, totaling more than 5,000 soldiers, participated in the Battle of Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Learn more about the lives of these veterans before, during, and after the war.
