The Lincoln Memorial from Dedication to Present Day
During the memorial dedication, President Harding minimized Lincoln’s role as the “Great Emancipator” to a segregated audience. Harding states that “Emancipation was a means to the great end—maintained union and nationality.” Despite his remarks, Harding does mention that Lincoln was in favor of the abolition of slavery as an ultimate goal.
