Description

“Shiloh National Military Park will commemorate the 157th anniversary of the battle of Corinth by offering a Living History Weekend focusing on Civil War artillery on Saturday, October 5th, 2019,” Superintendent Dale Wilkerson announced today. The scheduled living history programs, presented by the Shiloh Volunteer Cannon Crew and members of the Starkville Artillery Museum, will be conducted at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center.

The Shiloh Cannon Crew will be firing their reproduction 6-pounder field piece in the field behind the Civil War Interpretive Center. Each program will last approximately 30-minutes, and interpret the weapons, projectiles, and procedures Civil War artillery crews used during the war.

A special added attraction will be programs focusing on Artillery Support Vehicles during the Civil War. The vehicles being discussed will include a Rolling Forge, a Battery Wagon, and an Ambulance.

A period camp will be set up for the public to visit, and living historians will be available to answer questions concerning uniforms, equipment, and weapons. The following is a schedule of events for Saturday:

9:00 AM –       Camps Open to Public

10:00 AM –     Cannon Firing Demonstration

10:45 AM –    Artillery Support Vehicles: The Ambulance – the program describes the role of
the ambulance within the Union battery.

11:30 AM –     Cannon Firing Demonstration

12:00 PM –     Viewing of “Shooting a Sweet Gum Mortar” video 

12:30 PM –    Artillery Support Vehicles:  The Forge – the program describes how a forge was       necessary to repair iron parts of the carriage, limber, and wheels.

1:30 PM –       Cannon Firing Demonstration

2:30 PM –       Artillery Support Vehicles: The Battery Wagon – this program describes how the two-wheeled vehicle was used in the field carry tools and replacement parts for a battery. 

3:30 PM –       Cannon Firing Demonstration
