Special Event
The annual celebration of Juneteenth begins early at the Newcomer House on the Antietam National Battlefield with an 11:00 a.m. Porch Program talk on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
Educator, actor, and historic interpreter ZSun-Nee Miller-Matema will present "Juneteenth - Little Known Facts About How Blacks Contributed to Their Own Liberation!" Learn about the accomplishments of Black soldiers at the lead up to Juneteenth and beyond through the eyes of a mother whose son was sold away as a child but is reunited as he enters the town as an Army Captain and liberator. Hear compelling stories of bravery and a heartwarming reunion story.
Miller-Matema serves on the board of the Friends of Tolson's Chapel. Tolson's Chapel is a historic African American church located 1 1/2 miles from Newcomer House in Sharpsburg, MD. It was built in 1866 and served as a church and a Freedmen's Bureau school for black residents of Sharpsburg in the years following the American Civil War.
