The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and 1919 - Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry
Come to the Guntzel Theater from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on March 15, 2019 for a program with Seneca County Historian Walt Gable! This program continues the partnership between Women’s National Historical Park and the Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry.
Tonight’s topic is “A Danger Greater than War, The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and 1919.”
The infamous influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 killed more than 21 million people—more people than were killed in the fighting and destruction of World War I. It was the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. More people died of influenza in the single year of 1918 than in the four years of the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) from 1347-1351. More Americans died in this flu epidemic than were killed in the Civil War, World Wars One and Two, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Iraq War combined!
Walt Gable will explore the causes of this influenza epidemic and how it affected World War One as well as sharing stories of this epidemic in Seneca County.
