Description

Meridian Hill Park, also known as Malcolm X Park, is a structured urban park located in Columbia Heights and part of Rock Creek Park. The park was designed and built between 1912 and 1940. Since then, Meridian Hill Park has been a staple in the African American community as a gathering place for many years, creating a vibrant space for community building, recreation, and social action.

Join Rock Creek Conservancy and Rock Creek Park for this next installment in our series exploring the intersection of Race, History, and Rock Creek Park.

The event will feature a conversation with Elise Elder-Norquist. As a research historian, she contracted with the Organization of American Historians to complete studies for the National Park Service. Published works for the NPS include: Meridian Hill Park Special Resource Study: African American Experiences Since the Civil War (2019), Catoctin Mountain Park Administrative History Update (2020), Henry Farm: Cultural Landscape Inventory, Manassas Battlefield Park (2019), Georgetown Area Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Cultural Landscape Inventory (2018), and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts Administrative History Update (In Progress). She recently began working as a Historian in the private sector. Also joining us will be Brianne K. Nadeau, Councilmember for Ward 1 in DC, and Steve Coleman, Executive Director & President of Washington Parks & People, will also contribute to the conversation.

A zoom link will be shared with all registered participants on the day of the event.
