Author Roger Di Silvestro discusses TR's life in the Dakotas based on his book, Theodore Roosevelt In The Badlands. This event will take place at Christ Church Parish Hall, 61 East Main Street, Oyster Bay, NY.

On Valentine’s Day 1884, Theodore Roosevelt was stunned by the deaths of his mother and wife within hours of each other and only two days after his wife gave birth to their first child. So shaken that his family feared for his sanity, Roosevelt went to live on a ranch he had recently started in the Badlands of Dakota Territory. For the next two years he divided his time between New York City and his ranch, recovering his emotional stability and improving his physical health.

Roger Di Silvestro, a former senior editor with such magazines as Audubon and National Wildlife and author of the book Theodore Roosevelt in the Badlands: A Young Politician’s Quest for Recovery in the American West, will tell the story of Roosevelt’s ranching years, how they helped him become president of the United States, and how he evolved into a lasting political influence, helping to shape today’s world even as he shaped his own. Di Silvestro weaves into this tale the often-understated influences that women played in Roosevelt’s development during the ranching years.
